How to Teach a Rat to Learn
Reward and Punishment
Step 1: Prime the Rat in his own cage. With pellets of food which he learns are reinforcers [in the future!] which he is served when he is hungry [now how does the technician know WHEN THE RAT IS HUNGRY? OR WHETHER SOCRATES WOULD CHOSE MAKE A DEMOCRATIC CHOICE OF CHOSING HIS POISON TO BE HEMLOCK?]

Step 2: Pellets put in the hopper so rat learns to eat from hopper.
Step 3: Learn food pellets are reinforcing WHERE found, still to learn that bar-pressing when the SD light was on produced food will take time.
Step 4: Use a 'shaping' or 'successive-approximations' procedure. Initially, instead of rewarding the rat for producing the exact behavior we require - lever pressing - he is rewarded whenever he performs a behavior which approximates to lever pressing. [Like the role-model but no reward of award yet: OR IT MIGHT GO TO THE HEAD!?!]
Step 5: Closer and closer approximation for reinforcement of reward so he then rewarded for pressing the lever!
Step 6: . The rat will then be rewarded if he is in front half of the maze, then to the side, then with his head this way and then that and then with his paw on the lever and the act of doing the dance to the diktat of the reinforcer reward etc is learnt> HURRAY!
Step 7: The rat may still not have completely learned the operant contingency - specifically he may not yet have learned that the contingency between the operant response and reinforcement is signalled by the SD light. If we now leave him to work in the Skinner-box on his own he will soon learn this and will only press the lever when the SD light is on.
