The tirthikas were THE GOOD.
They were beginning to feel left out of the reverences accorded by the people with the advent of Samana Gautama on the scene.
So they roped in Sundari to spread a scandal about Samana Gautama to 'lower his prestige' and then they thought the people would return in droves to them!
Sundari bedecked, bejewelled and bewitching would go to Jetavana and when people asked her said, "I am going to Samana Gautama to stay with in the garden house [gandha kutir].
And staying the night in some gardens of the Tirthikas would return the morn saying she spent the night in Gautama's Gandha Kutir.
When the routine was established enough in the minds of the people the Tirthikas hired assasins to do away with her. SHE HAD SERVED HER PURPOSE! "Kill Sundari and throw her body on the rubbish heap near Gautma's Gandha Kutir."
This done the Tirthikas brought it to the notice of the officers of peace and justice and said that Sndari who would spend time at the Jetavana was gone missing!
Then when her body was found was the rubbish heap of Gandha Kutir accused THE DISCIPLES OF GAUTAMA OF HAVING KILLED SUNDARI TO HIDE THE SHAME OF THEIR LEADER!
But the ROUND ROBIN being what it is and 'what goes round must come round' came to home to roost on the SAME RUBBISH HEAP!
The assasins made off to the liquor lot and were busy quarreling about distribution of the 'prize money' for having killed Sundari!
The officers of peace and justice arrested them at once and implicated the Tirthikas at whose instigation the dirty tricks department set about the despatch and death of Sundari and thus the Tirthikas lost whatever goodwill they had for them!
